Message from the President
As global attention continues to grow on renewable energy expansion and environmental preservation, marine-based solutions such as offshore wind power generation and carbon capture and storage (CCS) are evolving rapidly. In parallel, the importance of high-quality marine environmental data has never been greater.
Established in 2023, new Horizon Ocean Research and Technology Co., Ltd. (nHORT) is dedicated to delivering advanced technologies and integrated services in marine research and environmental monitoring.
Building on cutting-edge marine robotics developed under Japan’s Cabinet Office Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP)—including Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and the Edokko Mark 1 seabed observatory—nHORT offers comprehensive solutions that encompass equipment operation, data acquisition, processing, analysis, and visualization. Guided by our mission to “deliver the required data, at the required depth, in the required area,” we provide scientifically rigorous and highly efficient survey services that support the advancement, safety evaluation, and environmentally responsible development of offshore wind and CCS projects.
In addition, as a core research partner in the third phase of the SIP program, “National Platform for Innovative Ocean Developments,” nHORT is actively engaged in research supporting the commercial application of technologies for extracting, separating, and refining rare earth elements from seabed mud collected in the waters surrounding Minami-Torishima. Establishing a stable domestic supply chain for rare earth elements is a national priority directly linked to Japan’s industrial competitiveness and resource security. nHORT plays a critical role across all stages of this effort—from field investigations and applied research to full-scale social implementation.
At new Horizon, we remain committed to advancing innovative ocean technologies, creating new value for the sustainable use of marine resources, and contributing to the responsible development of ocean industries for future generations.
